Retro, retro, retro! You can taste the burger, which was young people’s favorite during the time of  communism in Hungary. Funny but delicious. (Photograph: screenshot from Moszkva tér by Ferenc Török)

Moszkva tér was an ikonic meeting point for young people of Budapest on the Buda side during the years of the communism. It is necessary to translate the name of the place: Moszkva tér means Moscow square in English. This naming shows the sarcasm of the communist system. The square had called Széll Kálmán tér earlier, after WW2 they renamed it. Moscow square? This name for a place, where  more than twenty-thousand Hungarians were massacred by Soviets at the end of the war?

So, as I mentioned, many tram and bus lines meet here, and this is a stop of the M2 subway too, that is why it is one of main meeting points of the city. In the 80’s, there stood a tiny kiosk on the square, it was open all night long, and it offered burgers, hot dogs and hot sandwiches for costumers.

The most popular product was the Hungarian style burger: a piece of patty in a sweet bun with mustard and/or ketchup and (that’s the point!) with mixed pickles. We do not know, who figured it out, but this became the standard Hungarian style hamburger all over the country. There ara two types of Budapesters, either loves it, other not. The main character of the film Moszka tér by Ferenc Török does not, you can check it, just click ont the video (7:13).

Anyway, if you wanted to taste it, you can. I recommend Zing Burgers restaurant on Széll Kálmán tér (formerly Moszkva tér) next to McDonald’s, you can find Moszkva tér burger on the menu.
