Pancho, Wine and Sparkling Water

Óbuda is celebrating the tenth anniversary of rising the statue of Ferenc Puskás. By the way, it is time to talk about ’Puskás-fröccs’ again.

Óbuda is a sporty district of Budapest. Not just a lot of local sport clubs comfirm it but also a statue what you can find in the heart of District 3. It is a popular artwork, local residents as like it as tourists, because it shapes a really famous and nice guy, Ferenc Puskás football/soccer player.

Next Tuesday, 28th March is the tenth anniversary of rising of the statue, it is a right time to remember him. In a previous post I mentioned, he had liked drinking ’fröccs’, what is a mix of wine and sparkling water. There are a lot of types of ’fröccs’, one of them called ’Puskás-fröccs’ or ’6:3’.

I must tell you, Puskás prefered ’kisfröccs’, what is 1dl wine and 1dl sparkling water, according to the gossips he was able to drink any amount of it. But what is ’6:3’? In 25th November 1953 the English and the Hungarian national team played a match in London before the world championship next year, it was a friendly match without stakes but the international press was talking about ’the match of the century’, because the English had been unbeaten on the continent for 90 years and the Hungarians were one of the best teams of Europe that times.

Hungary won, final score was 6:3. Although while Nándor Hidegkuti kicked three goals, and Ferenc Puskás kicked only two, as the captain, he was the star of the team. That is the reason, why ’6:3 fröccs’, what is 6dl wine and 3dl water has another name: ’Puskás-fröccs’.

Anyway, the statue in Óbuda represents a great moment, when Spanish children are looking at Puskás who plays whith a ball. During the revolution in 1956 he emigrated to Austria, then to Italy and Spain, from 1958 he was a player of Real Madrid. The club was the champion of La Liga six times with Puskás, they won Champions League and European Cup, too. If you are talking about Puskás in Madrid, just use his Spanish ninckname, ’Pancho’.

But before you visit Madrid, come to Óbuda, Budapest and drink some ’kisföröccs’ or a ’6:3 fröccs’ in his memory! I swear, this is the best choice.
